I work at a fast food place and every time I hand an order out and i smile and I say hi and thank you have a nice day or I ask them how they are doing or how was your day and alot of times they just role their eyes or give me a dirty look and snatch the bag. Or I get the occasional head nod. Why can't people just say thanks atleast? Why so rude?

I mean I understand that it's just fast food and there are rude people that do work at restaraunts. But that is not a good reason. I mean where I work at everyone is nice and if anyone is ever mean to a customer...they get in alot of trouble from my boss. I mean I have to deal with this every day. It's my job 5-6 days a week all day long. I try to make the best of it. But it's like nobody wants any one else to be happy. It is hard sometimes. But regardless of how rude they are I still am nice to them.

I know not all people are rude, but I would have to say like 65-70% are. That makes me really appreciate the nice people and they make me have a better day too!

And to the one who said about the out of line manager...I am a manager and if another manager acted that way I would deffinitely set them straight and make a call to my boss asap! But I am happy to say that none of us are like that at our store. And I also think that people think that people that work a fast food job are low lifes and that they don' thave to be nice to us. I actually had a couple come in one day and eat. They sat in the dining room. I heard the guy say "look at the kind of people that work here, its not hard at all to get a job here, they must hire anyone" Let me tell you that really hurt me, but guess what I did as I passed by to clean the dining room tables right after he said that. I walked by and smiled at him! But inside I was thinking wow do I really look like I am scum?

Though some people are just rude, our lifestyle, including the whole fast-food thing, seems to push us and stress us out. Most of us don't get enough sleep, either. Often the lowest paid workers have the hardest jobs in terms of dealing with stress. So when someone comes in and doesn't smile or respond, it says more about him/her than he/she probably means to tell you. Just understand that people give out what they get, so the grouchy customer probably has a stressful life.
I'm glad that you are able to smile and be pleasant anyway, because yours just might be the only smiling face and cheerful voice that the miserable customer encounters all day long. Keep up the good work.

I had a friend years ago who was a manager in a fast food restaurant. A couple times when the drive through person was so pissy because the order had to be given multiple times and finally was asked to come forward and place order at the window he did something unique. As the driver started to drive away with the food order he'd smile real big and wave as he said "F-ck you very much! Have a nice day!" in a sing song cheerful voice. Of course once it hit, the driver would stop briefly and look back to which his response was one shake up and one shake down of his head as in if to say "yes" that is exactly what I said! OF course he was the manager so it was a bit easier to get away with this. And it wasn't every customer, just the rare ones that were soooooooo pissy!

The average person is a Jerk-wad these days. Especially the fast food prone population. Lazy...unmotivated, sometimes frazzled, too busy to care about a sincere drive-thru worker. Maybe you need a different job where you can be appreciated. Sounds like you are a sincerely nice person. Don't waste it at McDonald's or someplace like that.

I totally understand where you're coming from!! I worked at a small teriyaki place, where people are able to dine in or carry out. People would get irritated if I asked them questions IN ORDER TO GET THEIR LUNCH/DINNER MADE THE WAY THEY WANTED IT. A simple thank you goes a long way, you know?

Yes, people are getting more rude. People are so busy now-a-days, stressed out, that they take their frustrations out on others. I also think that people don't practice good manners. In fact, I've noticed that a lot of kids don't practice good manners either.

You are so right that so many people are rude. They don't have to be that way even if they are having a bad day. Cheer up, not everyone is rude.

I agree.. People are getting rude, but that's because everyone walks and works with alot of stress on their shoulders.. So they just try to rub it on the clients. That's sad , but very true!
Take care,
