The US has a Nuclear arsenal to annihilate the whole of Earth's landmasses 100 times over. A complete extermination of Animal and Vegetable matter through the initial strike and subsequent radiation presence. Even if the area is not hit directly the mass volume of mushrooms clouds will send enough radiated dust particles into the stratosphere where the jet stream will disperse and kill what ever survived.

Now the only counties that can start such a chain reaction are Russia and China. Maybe Russia will start something, but their arsenal has not been maintained properly and more than half of their ICBMs are not completely functional. China is still a poor growing country, it has more to lose with its close economic ties with the US than any other country in the nuclear club if even a small exchange were to happen.

North Korea boasts that it can hit the West coast of North America but the last two test of its missiles were utter failures, so more than likely they don't have any missile capable of the distance and is more of a ruse to use at the bartering table for Economic aid.

Terrorist detonating a nuclear device is a distant probability. Though the US is by no means safe from such an attack the technicalities to produce such an attack is what keeps it safe for the moment. Nuclear arms if not handled properly will leak radiation, enough so that any one near such a device will succumb to its deadly effects quite quickly, minutes. So buying a warhead is not enough to cement the deal, you still have to transport it. Via tell tail signatures, the devices fuel can be determined where it was made. An eventual attack of this sort with a nuclear device made by a terrorist nation will lead back to that nation. So a state like Iran will not support such an effort that will lead back to their states constitutional surrender or nuclear annihilation, unless of course their fanatical views see their mass suicide as a means to fulfill Allah's wishes.

I think, that it is a very good possibility. But it is always possible that other countries might be as well. There are to many hot heads and dictators in this world that the United Nations are letting get away with A bloody murder and it is just a matter of time.
I do not worry about this , though, because I know that if it happens and I am in the center of it that I will be with the Lord.

No. Do you have any idea how much more technologically advanced our missile detection is than almost any other country in the world? No, you don't, because no one does. We can speculate, but the truth is probably more insane than any of us could possibly imagine.
