The oxygen in the air helps the active ingredient in icy hot and such work. I would definitely not cover it.

You don't have to cover it. For the first 24 hours after a muscle strain you ice for 10 minutes, then heat (moist is best) for ten minutes. Then go to ice only.

Let it get some air so it can breathe. the ice hot will take care of it.

Do not cover any area after you have put icy hot on it. I can go to deep into the tissue. I can burn your skin.
