They do eat algae. And the young eat algae more readily than the adults.
However, if another source of food is available, they'll simply be more than happy to give up the algae to compete for regular fish food.

if you want a fish that will eat the algea off the walls then buy ap plec just be careful of what kind you buy some can get to be bigger than 2 feet some research first. chinese algae eaters prefer algae tablets or crustations and being that they are primerily BOTTOM feeders it makes sense that he is not cleaning the walls but some do anyways how many fish are in the tank if you have a lot then he could be getting full on fish waste or if you have koi or goldfish same thing full on waste. hope this helps and if you have any more questions email me I'll be glad to answer them also how big is your tank and how many of what fish do you have

are not getting a chinese language Algae eaters...they infrequently eat algae in any respect and are quite extremely aggressive. I undergo in ideas being at walmart as quickly as and that i watched a chinese language algae eater attack a danio...and suck the slime coat off. The Danio became into high quality in the previous the attack and afterwards appeared like it became into approximately to die. it may be extra effectual so you might get a siamese algae eater they stay small, are non violent, and eat algae nicely. or you may desire to continually attempt a magnet algae cleanser!

unfortunately, chinese algae eaters tend to only eat longer-length algae when young. as they grow up, it's no surprise that they completely ignore algae and tend to prefer tablet/pellet food. moreover, as adults, some have a tendency to be aggressive towards other fish. i have a friend who only buys juveniles to control the algae in his tank. when it grows up, he trades them in at the local pet store for a juvenile, thus solving his dilemna. :)

Only juvenile CAE actually eat algae, as adults they are omnivores and are very very aggressive to other fish. Watch what he does to a piece of frozen krill.

These really only eat algae as juveniles. Don't be surprised if as it gets older, it gets aggressive toward your other fish as well.
