The internet isn't a physical object as you might think of it.
It's a vast collection of computers and servers that are connected together, like a huge spiders web. There's no "central HQ".
What holds the internet together is the IP (Internet Protocol) which directs traffic across the network and the DNS (Domain Name System) which maps addresses (like www.yahoo.com) to IP addresses.

Dude, you've just tapped into one of the biggest mysteries known to man. The internet is a series of wormholes, created by Nasa scientists, and actually has no shape or form. It's a space-time oddity that defies all physical description, because it resides in another dimension. The best way to grasp it is to watch Back to the Future, and visualize the internet as a tiny bug in Michael J Fox's underpants, that travels with him in the Delorian. Hope that helps.

It is distributed, just like the telephone system: there are switching centers all over, and cabling between them. The closest thing to a central thing is the DNS: the Domain Name Server system, which has something like eleven computers which relay name changes to other DNS servers around the globe. When you buy a spot on a web host, the address of that spot gets sent to a DNS machine to be attached to the domain name you have registered.

companies own servers (big computer systems that are constantly connected to the internet) and domain names (web addresses). when you access a web site, you are looking at files that are on that company's server.
