There are definitely slow news days, and the airwaves still have to be filled. So, the news department's job is to find stuff that can be aired and do the best they can with it. For instance, those are the days (mainly on radio) you'll here of something like a blood shortage at the blood bank.

CNN and NPR would air "Special Reports" in which leading journalists and professors of journalism would analyze and comment on the implications of a day in which nothing of consequence happened. This would be followed by a "Town Hall Meeting" moderated by Geraldo Riviera in which the citizens of Cody, Wyoming give their reactions to such an event...er...non-event.

Unfortunately, there is always something happening.....If it isn't something that has to do with a celebrity, the stock market, the war in Iraq, etc. they will just look at the machine in the office that prints out news around the country, where someone has strangled their wife,husband, kid, neighbor, dog, the mailman, their coworker, name something......Unfortunately, there will always be weirdo wacko's on the planet, so news will never end!

They give longer weather reports and read a lot more sports scores to fill the rest of TV news hour.

There is always something happening. Always. Even if it's small, they'll blow it up to be 10 times bigger than what it was.
