I've recently been reading up on "shyness." And yes, traditionally the opposite of shyness is being an extrovert. :)

Prepare as much as you can for the debate. Know your topic and both all pros and cons for it. The more you are prepared to discuss the subject matter, the more confident you will be in presenting it during the debate. This should help eliminate being nervous about sounding like you don't know what you are talking about.

Do you have people in the class you are comfortable with? Whether you do or don't, pick either classmates or someone in the class and focus on debating to that person alone. Pick people on both sides of the room and when making your points speak to them. This takes away the talking to the whole group. Plus, it makes you come across as engaging everyone in the room.

Good luck on your debate!

Make sure you have an idea on what your going to say and take deep breaths before class. If your worried what others may think of your debate, remember that the rest of your class is worried about their grades too, so your all on the same boat. Try to have fun with it.

When you get up to speak look over their heads to the back of the room, don't make eye contact. Pretend they are all your best friends and they love you even if you make a mistake. Imagine them in their under ware. Know that all of them would be nervous in your shoes.

Don't worry what other people think of you, just think about what you know is true about you. Get up and do it anyway even if you are nervous. Every one gets stage fright.

Make sure you know your material so that you will have plenty to say and you won't have any awkward silences. You can do it. Be brave dare to do it. If you try you are not a failure.

WOW Higpoo totally nailed this one. With a debate it's always about being prepared. Know your facts in and out and in no time you'll be engaged without thinking about your shyness. In fact, you'll probably even enjoy the exposure once you are in your zone.
