Are you saying that the switch that controls the light or fan that is made of ball and wire to form a chain has broken? You can get a replacement switch of this type at the hardware store for under $5. If you don't know how to wire, pick up a book at the library or at the HW store called Wiring Simplified. It may even be on line. You will need to turn off the circuit breaker to that ceiling fan prior to working on the switch. If you don't feel you can do this safely, hire someone who can.

isolate the fan first of all. remove the securing screw from ether the top or bottom of the fan, if the cord will fit back into the hole on the switch tie a knot to stop it comming out replace front cover and try it. if you can not refit the cord you may have to replace the fan

My son did that to our ceiling fan. You will have to buy a new switch for it. If you take the bottom of the fan off you will be able to see the switch. That's what you need to buy and put on....Be sure you turn all the power off of the house before doing this....

Is the cord attached to anything? Are wires exposed?
sounds like you need a new ceiling fan.

shut of the power to the fan, and unscrew the switch, there is a string attached to it that you can pick up at home depot, install the string on the little chain.
