Sounds like a nice 17" widescreen, 120GB SATA drive, 1GB RAM, Dual Core processor, DVD reader/writer will suit you fine. Any retail laptop you purchase will only come with a 90 day trial of Microsoft Office, which is what you're going to want to use to make reports and presentations for school. You can purchase a student edition for only $149. This is a good price considering the full version is around 400-500 dollars. The Student edition is good for life, so you don't have to worry about renewing it.
I would stick to either HP, Toshiba, or Sony. You can get an HP with all of these features for around $899 at Best Buy. Same with Toshiba. Sony is going to cost a little more, but you pay the extra for Sony's reliability reputation. Also, they look a little cooler. Hope this helps.

There are basically two types of computers, those that run Windows, and those that are Macs.
From your list, either type would work well. Windows pc's tend to be cheaper, Macs are a little more expensive.
Macs are very stable and have a loyal following. You can find all the software for anything you need to do on a Mac or PC.
Check with your school and work and see what they use the most. It will be easier getting the same type.

Most important is the CPU. Get the latest out the Intel core 2 duo. You will need at least 1GB of ram to run Vista. Top two brands out are Dell and HP. Next is screensize. Mainstream is a 14.1 or a 15.4 inch widescreen.

i would recommend a Mac,... with 2016 Ghz,.... (you can also get a student discount..,)
you can also go for Mac book pro if you want more performance.
Apple also has the Leopard thats goin to come out in October (if you'd want to wait).. it has the ability to operate with many different windows..
