While his thoughts about the USSR were correct, we would have had a hell of a time defeating the Red Army. We would have had to nuke them. I wonder if Patton knew about the a-bombs? Probably not.

Another problem would have been the massive casualties such a move would have required. We were not, in 1945, ready to take on more deaths.

We also were still heavily engaged with the Japanese in the Pacific.

And finally, our allies, especially the UK, were sick of the war, having been in it for 6 years. They wanted peace or at least an end to hostilities.

So, no. And our relationship with Russia now is better, no matter how Bush has been screwing it up in the past few weeks.

We would have ended up like every other army that struck deep into russia and had to spend a winter there...oh yeah, we only had a handful of nukes then and two got used on japan and one was tested, so that would have been a non issue. Plus, their development plan for their own nukes was in full swing by the end of the war. Lets not forget the logistical difficulties that would entail. Japan would have probally stayed in the war and fought on their side, and all of our allies would have bailed out on us.

Oh yeah, wars are not won by bodycounts. They are won by the one who is the most willing to die to defend their principles. They could have lost another 20 million, and I really don't think they would have turned over and gave up. It would be the guerilla war of all guerilla wars, and would have made vietnam look like a day in the park. Lets not forget that they also have better tanks then us back then (the T-54 actually could stand up to panzers, unlike the Sherman).

I come from New Zealand and am really confused.

You keep on hearing the Americans say "The Russians are coming, The Russians are coming" .... why?

You keep on saying that the Russians are bad news ...... why?

To my recollection .... the USA and the Russians have never been to war or had any conflict together at all.

Am I right ... or wrong ?

If I'm right .... then why the agro ?

Darn .... wish I had put this on a question instead of an answer.

This is one Cold War Vet that would like to see them in NATO. I did enough duck and cover, don't want my grandchildren doing it.

They got problems, we got problems.

I say we focus on the common problem and not incite a riot.

Not a chance, biggest F/U our military made was not
getting rid of them when we had the chance. Just a side
note Russia lost 10,000,000 in WW II, no way could they
have defended themselves from us.
