Who the heck is Paul McCarthy?? John Lennon said that more people had heard of the Beatles than Jesus Christ, not that they were more popular. Media always has to twist peoples' words.

And that was the day all you Americans threw all your Beatles Aubums, LP's and 45's into the rubbish.
Yes they probably were more popular than Jesus at the time. But everyone got over that because it was a joke that John Lennan made.
You would have made a lot of dollars if you had only stored them up in your attic for the past 40 years.
I sold one of my LP's last year for $115-00. I also have 200 Music Sheets from the bands of the 60's that haven't been used, and I'm going to hang onto them for the next 40+ years.
I'm in New Zealand .... we don't throw anything away.

The always-outspoken John Lennon made this remark in response to the hysteria associated with "Beatlemania". He later retracted his statement, and tried to explain that he didn't mean it the way people took it; he meant only that their popularity had reached such unbelievable proportions that it had just become insane! A LOT of people took his comment a little bit too seriously. I was only ten at the time, but I can still remember the big uproar it caused, and hearing the news that millions of ex-fans were building bon-fires with their albums!
John's apology must have ultimately worked. A year or so later, they released Sgt. Pepper's.....and they recorded a whole slew of OTHER mega-selling albums before calling it quits in 1970!!!
The Beatles completely DOMINATED pop culture back in the '60s. You had to have BEEN THERE to understand!

It was John Lennon and he said it as a joke. People were praising the Beatles so much when they first started he said something along the lines that they were more popular than Jesus. It was a joke though. Their fans were pretty crazy in the beginning.

John Lennon.
The exact quote was, "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. ... We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first-rock 'n' roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It's them twisting it that ruins it for me."
It was part of a lifestyle piece by an "Evening Standard" reporter, just a bit of journalistic fluff, and that was his response when they came to the topic of religion. It wasn't meant to be an earth-shattering statement ... but was later taken out of the context of a puff-piece interview and made into a philosphy.

No, it was John Lennon. And, as you probably already know, it caused record burnings of Beatles records and all that.
