If you have diarrhea, how does antibiotics like Flagyl work better than pepto and immodium? Can someone explain in simple terms how these different medicines work and get absorbed into our bodies? thanks

Pepto and immodium can help stop your average diarrhea. You have an intestinal ILLNESS, probably a parasite since they gave your Flagyl, that needs to be killed. The anitibotics will kill the "bugs" and the diarrhea will stop. You can take all the Pepto in the world and it will not kill an intestinal parasite, only antibiotics do that.

Since you are taking Flagyl, you could be contagious. You need to be very diligent in washing your hands, not sharing towels, showering in the morning and before you go to bed to keep yourself clean, change your underwear frequently.

Take ALL of your antibiotics and if you are not well when they are gone, GO BACK TO THE DR. right away.

Pepto and Immodium work only on the syptoms (diarrhea) but not on the cause of the problem. Antibiotics get absorbed into the blood stream and fight the infection causing the diarrhea. Flagyl is primarily for gastrointestinal (stomach and gut) problems.

In some cases certain bacteria will cause diarrhea. In that case once this has been diagnosed Dr.'s prescribe an antibiotic to kill whatever bacteria strain that is involved. Pepto and Immodium are not meant to kill bacteria so hence if that is the root source of diarrhea then they will not help./ Always consult your Dr. for explanations and don't be shy to ask that is what they get paid the big bucks for!!!

Good Luck!!!

pepto and immodium treat symptoms, antibiotics often treat the root of the problem like an infection with ecoli. Antibiotics kill bacteria, pepto and immodium only treat specific symptoms like diarrhea or upset stomach.
