It doesn't always, depending on the person you ask. I love the present I am in. I love everything about my life RIGHT NOW. I have not always felt this way. But to answer your question, most people want something better, they are not content where they are, and if they haven't convinced themselves its their own fault, then they either romanticize the past or glorify the future, sometimes both. The present is real, and its much more fun to pretend you're somewhere else than to have to really deal with life. Dealing with life as it comes today means you have to examine yourself, who you are to other people, who you are to yourself...the present is completely honest. You can't fake life. You can alter memories or you can daydream about tomorrow but you cant do that to today!

The present is a tuff time. We're facting all of our problems NOW, not in past, not in the future. Many problems we had in the past are now solved, so we can look to it and be satisfied (sometimes...). The future is full of possibilities, and is where all of are dreams, all the things we want are. The present doesn't have a lot of context, it moves too slow, and we feel stuck here, between the things we did and the things we want. That's my two cents.

Because the present is stuck in the middle. And the grass is always greener on the other side.>

Seriously the past you can reflect on. And the future is unknowable. But the present is what you are experiencing now full force and where decisions must be made instantly.

when u think about the past u remember the good things, cuz it's not like you're gonna sit in the present, while you're sad, and remember that it was worse before. at least that won't happen often. u will always want to feel like at this very moment, this is the worst that you've ever felt. the future has endless possibilities, therefore u hope that it'll be better, and when u feel down, again we just want to tell our selves that this is the worst thing ever. we wallow in self pity

I think this is the problem of nostalgia.

Thinking about the past and the future are very unpleasant states to experience. I would find something else to think about.

Thinking about what was is to experience a dissatisfaction with what is in the moment. The same is true in consideration of the future.

Living in the moment is a challenge for most people. When you stop wishing for what was, the moment becomes more enjoyable. When you stop wishing for what could be, the moment becomes more enjoyable.

The suffering or pleasure of the moment is a choice that anyone can make.

Because all the problems you ever face are in the present. Because you live in the present.

Because when you're living in the moment you can't get any
real perspective on it's worth and it's easier to fall back on
"good times" or hopes for "better times". This present
time will become the good old days all too soon. Cherish it.

Time is an illusion. But I guess the easy answer here is that the present usually sucks and emotions like nostalgia are chemically mediated.

In the past, bad things fade, we do remember the good things best. Future is hope.
