The Stand and It are both good, as is 'Salem's Lot. I read that years ago and it scared the pants off me. It took me years and years before I could even bear to pick it up and re-read it... that's how scary it is!

The Stand and Salem's Lot are my two favorites. The Stand isn't scary in a horror sense, but it's pretty frightening all the same. Salem's Lot was so scary that I slept with all the lights in my apartment on for weeks, and still hate looking out the window at night! It truly gave me the creeps. I have re-read The Stand many times, but I don't even own a copy of Salem's Lot at the moment and don't know if I could bring myself to read it again.........lol. There is also a short story in Everything's Eventual called Autopsy Room 4 that is one of those psychologically scary things that you just can't get out of your head. All Stephen King fans should read it if they haven't already.

The creepiest stories ever written by Stephen King were Cycle Of The Werewolf, Pet Sematary, The Dark Half, Salem's Lot, and The Shining. These are basically the best horror stories King wrote. My recommendation would be to choose Night Shift, a collection of short stories by King, as your first read in terms of horror.

The Stand and Eyes of The Dragon are good, but they really are not traditional horror books. In fact, Dragon is nothing more than King's version of a modern-day traditional fantasy tale of knights and dragons. The tome entitled It is quite prolix in nature and over-rated. The main character, Pennywise is quite iconic, but that's the only saving grace of the tale. Also, The Dark Tower series is a fantasy / western series by King. Only dedicated fans read that series, and it isn't everyones cup-of-tea in terms of reading either. Desperation was quite sub-par.

Avoid the novels Cujo, The Tommyknockers, Christine, and Dreamcatcher. If you see them, either walk away or cover your eyes. They will suck away your life and clog your brain-cells with their inane and over-written tales. Just avert your attention from them. Alas, I had to learn the hard way by matter of reading them.

He's written so much, and so well, my favourites are The Talisman, and The Stand, and a book called Insomnia, I really enjoyed the 7-part Dark Tower series until the last page, when I felt like screaming with disappointment !! But starting with his short stories wouldn't be a bad idea.

In his book "On Writing", Stephen King says that "The Stand" is the most popular book with his fans.

Most of the books I would have mentioned already have been- his short story collections, Shining, Stand, Salem's Lot, It. I do have to defend one that was heavily criticized, though. Christine. I loved that book, and I am so not a car person. I mean, you sit in them, and the wheels move somehow, as if by magic. but anyway, check out the novels mentioned and enjoy.

Broad question. Actually, as you can see from the spread of answers you already have, the best book is always the one you like the most. Reading enjoyment is just as personal and different as the writing experience.

If you like it, it's good to you. If you don't like it, the opposite is true for you. I happen to be one who is not overly fond of Stephen King, so I have no opinion to share with you other than just to remind you that the reading experience is subjective -- and personal. No one can tell you which is the best one to read. You have to read them and decide that for yourself.

I loved the Dark Half. This young boy is getting head aches and is taken to the doctor .. they remove a tumor that is in his brain and has other body parts in it. Then the man is older and is an author, and some of his books(murder in them and such) are coming true...I won't give away the good parts but lets just say that this book is engrossing and awesome!!!!

I love his books. I started with The Stand when I was 13. It's still my favorite, but I also loved the Dark Tower series.
I'd start with one of the ones he wrote earlier in his career. Carrie, The Shining, The Stand
