Her Majesty's full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. It was her grandfather King George V (not her father who later became King George VI in 1936) who changed the family name. The original family name was Saxe-Coberg Gotha, which was Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband's family name. The reason for the change in the family surname was because Saxe-Coberg -Gotha was a German surname and there was a lot of Anti-German sentiment in England at the end of WWI.
King George V chose the name Windsor, not only because of it being the name of Windsor Castle which at that as it remains now, one of the royal family's favorite residences, but because the name was more Anglocized and it linked the royals with their subjects. Though it was decreed after the birth of Prince Andrew in 1960 that all royal children should carry the surname Mountbatten-Windsor, in public members of the family go by Windsor. Mountbatten, of course is the surname of the Queen's husband Prince Philip. Of course the children of Princess Anne are exempt from carrying the name of Mountbatten-Windsor because Zara and Mark carry their father's name, Phillips.

her last name is Windsor - as in Castle. I think the Children of the Monarchs Children are named Mountbatten Windsor - Phil the Greek's last name is Mountbatten.
The name was changed during the first world war from Sax Coburg as it upset the natives.
Always remember the British Royal Family is infact Dutch and German; the English and Scottish bits were removed when James abdicated.

In 1917 Queen Elizabeth's father (King George V) issued a Proclamation:
"from the date of this Our Royal Proclamation Our House and Family shall be styled and known as the House and Family of Windsor, and that all the descendants in the male line of Our said Grandmother Queen Victoria who are subjects of these Realms, other than female descendants who may marry or may have married, shall bear the said Name of Windsor".
According to this declaration the Queen's name would be Windsor until she married. The Queen married in 1947, however, in 1952 the Queen issued a declaration saying that it was;
"her Will and Pleasure that She and Her Children shall be styled and known as the House and Family of Windsor, and that Her descendants other than female descendants who marry and their descendants shall bear the name of Windsor."
Indicating that although married she would continue to carry the name Windsor.
In 1960 the Queen then Proclaimed:
"while I and my children will continue to be styled and known as the House and Family of Windsor, my descendants, other than descendants enjoying the style, title or attributes of Royal Highness and the titular dignity of Prince or Princess, and female descendants who marry and their descendants, shall bear the name Mountbatten-Windsor."
Indicating that Mountbatten-Windsor would be the name of those descendants who were not in line for the throne.
A long story short, her last name is Windsor NOT Mountbatten-Windsor

this could be a complicated one to answer. Royalty do no longer quite have a 2d call. as a exchange they have a house call, the present one being the homestead of Windsor. besides the fact that it is often used for a 2d call if one is needed. whilst the Queen served in worldwide warfare II she became into indexed as Elizabeth Windsor. besides the fact that because she has exchange into Queen you will see that she in many cases signs and indicators EIIR or Elizabeth Regina. so which you may desire to argue that she is utilising Regina (Queen) as her 2d call. Then comes something of the kinfolk. Untitled descendants of the Queen have the 2d call Mountbatten-Windsor. those titled are assume to be of the homestead of Windsor nevertheless yet in many cases the Queens grandchildren use their mothers and fathers call as a surname. for occasion whilst Prince William graduated his call became into spoke of as "William Wales"

Actually boys and girls Mountbattan was the last name of PRINCE PHILLIP (Queen Elizabeth's husband and Prince Charles' father) ....Windsor being Elizabeth's actual last name PRIOR to marriage to Prince Phillip----so, if they were US citizens rather then british royalty, they would be Phillip and Elizabeth MOUNTBATTAN.... however, the british royal family was the WINDSORS (Elizabeth's last name prior to marriage).... and that is why her reign is still "in the House of Windsor"......
