I just brought the gourami home for the summer, and am trying to find the best place to keep him. He is in a 5 gal. tank, and I thought that if they won't kill each other, the beta could move in with him until August.

Normally it's not a problem at all, but on occasion you can get a Betta or a male gourami with an attitude and have some problems. I would say go ahead and put them together but do watch for the first week or two in case.

i have a 20 gallon tank with multiple male gouramis and a betta. the betta is happier than i thought he would be -- he swims around with them some even. in a five gallon he would need a big plant that could be his territory and he will protect it by flaring and whatnot. really they would be better off in a larger space because 5 gallons doesn't offer a lot of privacy for the betta.

Don't try it. Some males can get along just fine with other tropicals (as long as it's not another male beta) But some others refuse to give it a second thought. Once they start to fight, good luck stopping them. Try putting the two tanks next to eachother and see if the bets flares up. If he does, there's your answer. Good luck.

no i'm pretty sure that the gourami (an aggressive fish) will kill your betta. As tough as the bettas rep is they are actually pretty fragile. Male bettas do not have to be housed singly as long as they are with community non fin nipping fish.

I have had Bettas with many types of community fish and have had no problems

No. Male Betas need to be kept on their own. Sorry.

I really wouldn't recommend trying it. Either one or both fish could end up dead.
