is there any point in having programs like Ad-aware and Spybot if i have Norton Antivirus 2007? ad-aware is only for adware and spybot i think is for adware and spyware. norton gets rid of viruses, adware, and spyware. is there anything norton doesn't do that i'd need those programs for?

Norton specializes in virus removal. It might also remove some harmless or outdated spyware/adware. But it is best that you keep Spybot and Ad-Aware as they specialize in adware and spyware removal and are more effective at removing them than Norton is. Norton Antivirus is just that. It effectively gets rid of only viruses, nothing else. I suggest you add to your security arsenal CCleaner, Spyware Blaster and AVG antispyware. You can never be too safe form spyware. However, NEVER run two antivirus apps.

It is popular opinion that Norton isn't that great. I must agree. You could try AVG Free. It's much better and you don't have to pay a cent for it.

You can get Ad-Aware 2007 (Free), the latest version, here:

Anti-Virus is just that....a program that secures your PC from a virus. If you have Norton System Works, that may help in all areas. IMO, Norton is the worst to have. If you have Windows, get Microsoft's Anti-Spyware program aka Defender and also get the free and awesome AVG anti-virus program.

I use AD-Aware, Norton, AVG, Search and Destroy, Spysweeper and Spyware blaster and have not had even a bot in three years, some programs find some things that others do not, all these can be found on... downloads.com

It is always good to have a couple of on-demand spyware scanners in your malware removal toolbox. Just in case.

With new malwares being created each and every hour, 24/7 no single anti-malware app can ever catch all the bad-boys.

Most anti-virus programs can only detect between 80% to 99% of KNOWN malware, when you add in brand new malware, the percentage drops considerably.

Being prepared, never hurt.

Actually Norton can't remove all spyware so you really need a program like Adaware too.

Fist of all You could not pay me enough to use Nortons or McAffee's programs. Spybot, AVG, and most of the free ones do not interfere with other programs

Actually Norton sucks! and most computer techs will tell you that. I had Norton and ended up with over 100 viruses-I have AVG now-no problems at all!!

As others have said, Norton AV isn't that great. In fact, years ago, it did actually catch a virus that was embedded in one of my main program files. Norton AV decided to DELETE that entire file rather than trying to fix it (or even alert me that it was deleting an essential file). I have had wonderful luck with AVG.
