what is the creature that lives inside the barnicel?

While walking on the beach my husband and i fond a crustation that would normaly be found on the bottom of a ship,anyway it had a living creature in it. It seems to be some form of mussle or snail .

The creature is a barnacle - the shell is part of its body.
