The lava lamp can go on until the small bulb burns out.

I believe I seen this on mythbusters. It can do more than burn out. It can actually explode as the liquid is continuously being heated and therefore increasing the pressure inside the lamp until it explodes or cracks open and leeks out.

well, they are just powered by a light bulb so the bulb only has so many burn hours
