I am 22 now and have never signed for selective services at the post office when I was 18. I figured if I really had to I would have gotten somthing in the mail. I registered as a voter, and recieved financial aid for college without signing for the selective services. (both are examples I heard you cant do unless you signed for selective services) My parents told me they didnt send me anything because of my last name. I guess I am the only one in my family that can carry on the last name? I am just curious if this could be the answer or not. I am interested in a career as a postal worker, and it says that you should have signed on. I look at it as Uncle Sam never told me to sign on so I am not. Untill people are running around my country with ak's blowing up innocent people, I am not enlisting.

When you turn 18 and go to the post office, you register yourself with the selective service. You don't sign up for it.
Registering is required. Registering is a way of Uncle Sam keeping track of eligible men when the draft is initiated.

They'll refuse a government job to you. It is illegal to not sign up (and just because they don't come to you doesn't mean you're not legally bound to have to do it). Did they tell you that you HAD to file your taxes? No you knew that the law required it. Legally they could take back your student loans AND put you in jail for FRAUD. Legally to get loans you had to sign that you had signed up.

However, at this point it's dobutful anything will happen. Getting a job that requires any type of background clearance might be hard, and if you lie on the application about it they can fire you for cause if they did hire you.

The way the system is designed, even if a draft occured those 19 are the first group activated, followed on up to 25 and then 18.

First of all, signing up for selective services is NOT enlisting. Even if you "exempt", as my brother is, you still MUST sign up. If the feds find out you didn't sign up and received college financial aid, you will have some pretty heavy penalties to pay. I suspect that you signed up without realizing it. When you fill out the FAFSA, you can automatically be registered for selective service.

i understand your theory but if you for some reason dont get your gas or electric bill in the mail you still owe. you shouldnt have been able to get financial aid but with goverment jobs they do ask if you signed with selective service.
