Volunteers, who may be just as "professional" and well-trained as paid firefighters, owe a duty to protect themselves and others from becoming victims of injury while responding to or working at emergency scenes. The station "standard operating guidelines" may well state "proper dress" for off-hours responders, but at a minimum relies on common sense. Responders who display lack of good judgment will eventually lose the trust or respect of others.

Where is this happening??? It's just GOT to be wrong.
doesn't matter if they are "volunteer". Some towns only have volunteer fire departments and they serve the same purpose as a paid service.
It just can't be safe and i'm sure it's against the law.
Guess the right people haven't caught wind of that.
I would alert the proper authorities.
Last thing ANYONE needs is some kind of lawsuit on their hands !

I've never in thirteen years seen a firefighter in my volunteer company show up to a call in flip flops.
We wear boots as part of our mandatory personal protective equipment, sometimes the rubber structure-fire boots, and sometimes the Redwing-type wildland boots, but it's boots, or you have to go home and get them before you're allowed to play.....

men in basic terms shouldn't positioned on turn flops everywhere however the pool/coastline. i'm all approximately gender equality yet there is no longer something incorrect with leaving some stuff for women and a few stuff for men.

That definitely sounds that it could be pretty dangerous. Plus it seems like you need to be able to move fast on calls and flip flops don't really enable you to do so.

Well, there is nothing illegal about it. However, it is VERY unsafe. If you are injured on the job, and are wearing flip flops, you may not be covered by the fire dept's insurance. You may also be denied worker's compensation (if you are paid).

They're volunteers that's the key. It's not smart but they're volunteers, at least they're there giving their time so don't worry about what they wear worry about whether or not your house burns down.

They are volunteers. If you want them to act and dress professionally then you must pay them professionally.
