"The bodies of Marie [Antoinette], Louis XVI and Madame Elisabeth (Louis' sister) were buried in a mass grave near the location of today's La Madeleine church and covered in quicklime. Following the restoration of the Bourbons, a search was conducted for the bodies. On January 21, 1815, more than twenty years after her death, her corpse was exhumed—a lady's garter helped with identification—and Marie Antoinette was buried at the side of her spouse in the crypt of St. Denis Basilica just outside of Paris, the traditional final resting place of French monarchs."

I think the first answerer, "Wilhemina31," is thinking about Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII :) Marie Antoinette was hated by the French people. Propaganda promoted her as lesbian, incestuous with her son, & promiscuous with men (all at the same time!). Austria was not a friend of France in her later years, and, being from Austria herself, she was accused of corresponding with them and commiting treason (which in fact she did do). She was INCORRECTLY believed to have said "let them eat cake" when told that the people of Paris were starving for bread. She in fact said that she believed the royalty should go out of their way to help the people who sacrifice so much for the country - but by this time, the country hated her so much that they created an image of her that led to her total destruction. It wasn't enough that they cut off her head - they wanted her name, her soul, every bit of her destroyed in the process. At her trial, they accused her of incredibly foul things, which I can't imagine how she withstood as a mother and human being.

Marie Antoinett was the wife of Louis XVI, and queen of France. Unfortunately, she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. France had huge debts and famine when her husband took the throne. The chaos led to riots. When people were starving and lacking bread in France it has been said she remarked, "Let them eat cake." She was excecuted during excessive reprisals of the French Revolution
