The Africans knew about it all the time. If they followed their coastlines in one direction they ended up in Europe, the other in Asia. If they went straight out they usually died because their boats were not good enough to make it to South America or Australia.

There is no one answer; however, Ferdinand Magellan was the first person to navigate around the world, so that might be your answer. He did however die before his ship made it back, but since he was the captain for the entire ship until he died just before he got back, it is credited to his name
