I think it should be kept in the past tense:

he was tired but he wanted to pick the right place

He wanted a different place to stay, somewhere more comfortable and dry. He WAS tired but he WANTED to pick the right place. Then, he saw an old heritage site church.

The tenses are wrong, as you use both the present and past tenses. Grammatically, the first sentence is a run-on.

"He wanted a different place to stay; someone more comfortable and dry. He was tired, but he wanted to pick the right place."

That would be the best way to fix it.

Gramatically, it's weak. Tenses and such are fine, but you may want to refine your style.
