People in Planes - Falling by the Wayside
Elefant - Uh Oh Hello
Better Than Ezra - Felt Like a Lifetime
30 Seconds to Mars - The Kill
The Academy Is... - Slow Down
Halifax - Sydney
Anything by the Goo Goo Dolls is good.
The band Saliva is awesome, too. I like Nickelback and Fall Out Boy as well.
I love older kind of rock, so I enjoy Pat Benatar and Bon Jovi. Some good older songs are:
J. Geils Band - Centerfold
Kansas - Carry On Wayward Son
Sting is freaking awesome, as is Phil Collins.
Creedence Clearwater Revival is pretty old school, too.
If I think of anything else that's worth mentioning, I'll let you know. (: I hope that I helped at least a little.

Hmm, if you don't want metal or punk, either go with more classic stuff, the Who, Led Zepplein, Queen, etc. or find the alternatives. Grunge is kinda the bastard child of metal and punk, so that probably isn't a good choice for you.
I'd personally recommend the Clash's album "Sandinista!". Yes, they are a punk band, but this album was definately alternative, the only punk thing left to it are the lyrics, which I don't think is too much of and obstacle to get over if you're looking for alternative. That's 36 good songs for you right there.
