First of all where do you live? Some cities like Chicago and Washington DC have laws prohibiting civilians from owning handguns. Also what state do you live in? Some states are shall issue, which means they can give you a concealed carry weapons permit without a lot fuss, others are NOT shall issue which basically means it is at the whim of the Sheriff or Chief of your city/county. It is not illegal to own a gun in your house without a license..but again it depends which state you are at. YOU cannot carry a gun on you concealed without a permit. You need the permit. They will also require you to take a short course on this. IT is mandatory, since if you ever have to use the gun, you will have to be trained in it. (don't worry it's only like 1 class). It's best to follow the law that way it will be easier to justify if you ever have to use the gun for your defense.

To own a gun you must be 21 years of age.If you have a felony record you will never be able to own a gun legally. In most states you ARE required to register and license a handgun, But not rifles or shotguns. Some states require that you register every gun that you own,Regardless of what it is.
If you carry a concealed weapon on you without a concealed weapons carry permit, You can go to jail for 1-3 years. If you want a concealed weapons permit,Contact your local gun store and ask them where in your area the concealed carry classes are located. But before your permit is issued to you ,You must pass a police and F.B.I. background check. And then it will take between 3-6 months before you receive the permit. To find out the firearms laws in your area,On licensing, concealed permits and any other questions that you may have,Contact your local police department and ask them. I hope that helped you...

Depends on where you live.

Most gun laws are enacted at the state level. There are some Federal Firearms laws, but they generally regard the owernship of fully automatic weapons, and regulate things like how long shotgun barrels can be and who can own explosives, etc.

The kind of laws you are talking about vary from state to state. It is a lot easier to buy and own a gun in Texas than it is in New York.

Your best bet is to find a legitimate gunshop and talk to the owner. Most of the gun dealers I have met know the gun laws like the back of their hand, better than most attorneys actually. Thats because the have to. Under Clinton there was a real push to drive gun owners, shooting ranges, etc. out of buisness by making the regulations very very tight. The gun store owners now know that if they mess up they can go to jail, so most of them play it VERY safe and know, understand and follow the rules.

Since the assassination of President Kennedy, it is illegal to have a gun without a permit. You are not allowed to carry it in public without a special permit. If you are caught, you will go to jail.
As to defending yourself, be careful: usually, the defender goes to jail, not the perpetrator.
Sorry, we not only do not live in a Democracy, we live in a mixed up country where criminals have more rights that law-abiding citizens.
But, check your local police department. Some police departments actually like an armed citizenry; less crime.
Good luck!

Most states do not require gun licenses. The few that do are Illinois, New York, and a few others.

Other states have different laws. And many local jurisdictions can require gun licenses.

But typically these days, a gun license is not necessary for a home defense gun.

Your best bet is to check with BATF here is the link to a compendium of state and local laws controlling lawful gun ownership: read it, study it. Know it.

That answer is not true - in USA - each state has different laws.

In one state there are no restricitions on hand guns; you can even strap one on your hip like an old cowboy and walk through town ... and the incidence of violence with guns is LOWER in that state than others that have insane strict gun laws.

Only the people that care about the law - follow the gun laws.

anyway - just do a google search on gun laws in your state and you will get some good guidelines. Just always be careful with a gun.

It depends on what your locality thinks of its citizens. If it's afraid of its people, or if it simply wants power, the locality will prohibit self-protection. On the other hand, if they believe in their citizens, then they'll "let" you protect yourself.

Either way, it's better to explain to a jury why you had a gun when you needed it, than it is to show a coroner that you didn't.
