Your teacher is an @$$h01e! He could have simply looked at the test itself (what he gave you) and then written the test number on the examination paper (what you wrote your answers on). Moreover, he could have simply asked if you understood that each test had a coded number written on it. What an idiot he is!

Yipes! It sounds a bit extreme to me, but then again I teach in elementary school and not secondary school...and they are totally different worlds sometimes. ;o)
It sounds to me like you missed part of the directions he gave before the test began. Rather than "Ummm, I don't know???" you could have said something like, "I'm sorry. I must have missed that. Could you explain it again?" or "Oops! What number do you need me to write?"
Perhaps you can talk with him and explain that after having worked on your test so hard that you didn't understand clearly what he intended by his question but that you meant no disrespect. Then ask what you could do to improve your test grade...take it over, put the number on it, etc.
He was probably frustrated about students not listening carefully. It can be a sore spot with teachers. I speak from experience as an elementary school teacher. I've never taught secondary, so I can't speak to that; however, most elementary school teachers would be very willing to work with a student who made an effort, approached them respectfully, and displayed a good attitude.
If going to him yourself doesn't work, you might ask a parent to go with you to speak to him. If that fails, then go to an administrator or counselor (whoever handles that sort of thing at your school).
I hope you get it all straightened out. And I know it's not always easy because sometimes directions get long and drawn out for whatever reason, but do make sure that you get all of the directions before you start. :o)

Well, he had probably two or three different editions of the test and because you did not write down your test number, there is no fair way for him to grade it. What would he do? Grade your test with each key, give you the benefit of the doubt, and then give you whichever score is highest? Chances are, if he's printing multiple editions of the same test, he has had a problem in the past with students cheating. Tell your teacher that you'd like another shot at the test. That is the fair thing to request and if he's reasonable, he'll let you retake it. Go for it!

Clearly, you did NOT follow All of the directions. You were told to write a specific number on your test sheet, but you didn't.
If you didn't understand what your teacher asked you to do in the first place,(which was to write the number on your answer sheet), you should have said something like: "I'm sorry, I don't understand what you would like me to do."
The answer you gave implies that you do not know whether or not you are going to write down the number. He did not know what you meant by "umm, I don't know".
Since the teacher gave you an additional opportunity to comply by warning you in advance that you would get a failing grade if you did not comply, and since you did not comply, it is quite reasonable for him to give you an 'F'.

I so feel you, some teachers are complete a holes. Teachers are human beings like we are. I had a teacher like that, what she would do is talk about the students with other students. She showed favortism and gave you a grade base on if she liked you. She would lock you out of class even if you weren't late. She was a demon. She's no longer there. They finally let her go. Be strong, go to your family for support, your principal, and if all fails, go to the SCHOOL BOARD!!! that'll shut'em up. Good luck

Maybe he thought you were being sarcastic when you said you didn't know. This isn't fair for him to give you a F. Some teachers take off points for not following directions, but to fail you completely is not right and he isn't a good teacher. Take it up with the principal or the school counselor.

Are you certain that the teacher gave you an F? Sounds to me like the teacher had given instructions and you weren't listening and therefore didn't follow them. He was undoubtedly frustrated with you. He asked you about it when you turned in the test. He gave you the opportunity to fix the problem. I would take a convenient time like before or after school to talk politely to your teacher and ask if you might have mercy and to please grade your test. Chances are, after reconsidering, the teacher did not really give you an F after all. He was just tired, frustrated and cranky at the moment.

Wow that's not fair about the F or that your still in school!! My school got out like 2 weeks ago!!! That's not fair to you guys at all!! Also you should do like most ppl are telling you and tell the princpal or your parents, or maybe even your teacher. I know sometimes my teachers get into bad moods and do that to us then they apologize, but if the test counted as your end of the year grade i would take it up with someone b/c that's not fair.

This does not seem fair. Talk to your principal. You should get credit for the answers that you gave. He can not give you an F for not putting a number on your paper.

Did he give you instructions about putting the number on? (you leave that out).
If he did, I am afraid he has the right to fail you - that is a teacher's discretion.
Were you rude or have an attitude with him (be honest). I don't know if you were or weren't but that wouldn't help. How has your attitude been all year?
I don't like to fail students over such things but I have - students have to listen to instructions and have a compliant attitude - all students.
