I have a new 2007 Ford Ranger light pickup that I drive maybe 150 miles per month in moderate suburban traffic. It could be years before my 5000 mile service is due.

Is there any sort of regular maintenance I should do before then? Oil? Filters? Tires?

I'd appreciate any expert advice.

you should change the oil every 6 months or so even if you dont drive enough miles, moisture builds up in the engine and accumulates in the oil. this causes sludge formation.

You may want to keep an eye on the fluid levels a little closer. Like you, I drive a limited number of miles also. For my first oil change, I changed it at 600 miles. I wanted to get rid of the start up oil, in case there were metal shavings from the machining of the engine. After that, I change the oil every 3000 miles.

On a low milage car like that make sure you let the car warm up before driving. cold engines wear faster and dont burn off gunk internally. change oil atleast once a year if not every six months.
keep an eye on tire pressure as well

well the rule of thumb is (or was) 3000 miles or 3 months, since the reccomendations on newer vehicles is 5000 miles, I guess You'd have to go with 5 months.

the first time oil gets hot, it begins to breakdown, so stick with the 5 months...

Don't forget to keep it greased, if applicable - alot of newer vehicles have 'sealed' chasis components...
