Currently the Core 2 Duos are the fastest available. This means they are faster when you are doing programming, rendering, office applications, surfing the net, running a virus scan, etc. And not surprisingly, this also means that they are faster when gaming. Where this bogus myth about AMDs somehow magically being faster at gaming while slower at everything else is beyong me, but is untrue, as the benchmarks I list should show.

Intel is better for apps due to thier core 2 duo processors. They are also known to run cooler and hence is used alot in laptops right now.
AMD is better for gaming and used a lot in gaming computers. Their Quad Core is supposed to be coming out and will probably overtake Intel. Plus AMD has proven itself to be a bit better in overclocking also and performing better when overclocked.
Both just go back and forth in terms of who has the fastest. But truth be told it mostly depends on what you are running. If you want to run apps such as photoshop and autocad Intel is better but if you want to play beast games, then AMD has always proven to be better in that area.
