My "feeder" fish (one of those 25 cent goldfish you buy to feed to snakes and stuff) is at least 7-8 years old. He was like the fish you see at carnivals for prizes, but he grew to about 3 or 4 inches long. He lost his orange color about 4 years ago. But why on earth has he lived so long??? All of his younger companions have long since passed away. I am worried about him being lonely, but I don't want more fish right away after he dies...I have never heard of a common goldfish living so long....

I feel really bad for him in case he is lonely, but I really don't want to get another fish....I'll try to put up a mirror by his tank : ]

I haven't been caring for him in a really amazing way or anything...I just feed him his fishy flakes and clean his tank periodically.

I have a fish just like that. :] We've had him for 9 years, now, and I'm banking on him being at least 4 inches long. I think with this particular kind of fish, if you take good care of them they'll live for a while. If he's lonely and you don't want to put any more fish in the tank, try putting a mirror on one side? It cheers my fish up, haha!

Feeder fish lives longer than the expensive goldfish because feeder fish are used to dirt and mud. I have one too I had this since 2000 and I only paid 25 cent for this mutherfocker still alive

Common goldfish should live 15-20 years in the proper habitat. They can lose color as they age. You should be proud of yourself for doing well with him, keep up the good work.

You're fish survived mostly because of its own health status and will to live. Only community fish will be somewhat lonely. No one can actually ascertain the level of lonliness though. It depends on how you care for your fish also.

Common goldfish will outlive almost any furry pet you can buy. Records of them living to 50 nearly can be found if you search.

Wow, I am also surprised it is living so long. Mine supposedly lived long and she was alive for like 2-3 years. I don't know what to tell you. I suggest going to a pet shop and telling them your situation. See if they have any ideas.
