Why do people always suggest mainstream anime series?

Whenever someone asks to suggest a new series people always suggests "Naruto", "Bleach", "FMA", "Fruits Basket" ect. even though sometimes the kind of series the person likes isn't ACTION or isn't drama. Are people just answering questions to get points? or do they not know the difference between different anime genres? I'm not trying to be mean, but most of these series are hard to avoid. I don't think someone who is asking for new series would have never seen any of these around.

Because some mainstream animes are good, and lots of people just like to tell their favorite animes. I find it annoying when they do that.

yes, it's partially because they are both good and popular and sometimes the people don't have a clue about the genres that people ask in Y!Answers.
But I think that the popular ones that you mostly named are also said alot because they shows alot of these genres all rolled into these shows (have you watched these shows and noticed how FMA has action but alot of drama that reflects the lives of man?). There is another point that because these shows are popular that the show is more open to them so they have different ways to be able to watch these animes. Small animes on the internet are very difficult to search for because few people show these.

But then again, some people might just be answering to get the 2 points but that doesn't mean that they have to give them 10 more.

Those people in my book are "cartoon network" people. They only know what was popular, say, like 2 years ago? Most of them haven't heard or seen Evangelion, which clearly defined a whole generation.

If you want to see a good series go for Slayers. Comedy, Magic, a group of misfits characters that fight tons of villains just because, and did I mention the heroine can be WORSE than the villains?
