Your motherboard only supports socket 754. After finding that, a search on newegg.com shows that the best processor for that socket is an AMD 3400+ for $35.
You wouldn't gain much from that upgrade. If you look into a new motherboard to support a new processor, you'd have to end up buying new RAM as well. A socket 939 motherboard (for AMD) can reuse your DDR RAM, with its best processor being the AMD 4400+ or so, while socket AM2, a newer one, would require DDR2 RAM yet allow the some of the best processors.

You need to identify what kind of Sempron processor you have already this is determined by the socket (cpu type). A Socket 754 motherboard can support Athlon 64 processors while Socket 462 motherboard is built around 32 bit instructions. An article is here to help aid you in figuring out what you currently have. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/201
However even if your motherboard is a socket 754 this doesnt always mean it can support all AMD 64 based processors. Your best bet is to read other peoples stories off the web. Just do a search under the specific motherboard model number and add some keywords like upgrade processor, overclocking, etc. You might just find some great ideas.

'Sockets' are the key here. Different processors often have different pin layouts. Decide what processor you want, then buy the motherboard with the matching socket (and compatibility).
Its unlikely you will be able to just take one out and put a new one in. Often memory requirements are different too

Incidentally, if you are going to do that, get an Intel Core 2 line, they are much more stable and run a lot cooler too, Althlon 64s are already becomming a bit dated...

i think the best thing to when upgrading a cpu is to upgrade the motherboard also.....most of the time the cpu will run better if you have a newier motherboard.

good luck

and p.s.

go intel core-duo E6600 or quad-core QX6700 with the asus striker extreme and you'll be kicking.

You need to check Asus's website and look for the latest BIOS, it should inform you what its capable of taking. some even have a page showing you what your board can accept too

You have to know the form factor of the mother board and see if that form factor is compatible with that chip.
