If I remember correctly, a sentence should contain a noun or pronoun and a verb to qualify as a sentence. The shortest correct sentence I know of is "I am." Of course it can include much more than that.

There's a problem with the "a sentence is a complete thought" definition that we were all taught in grade school--what's a "complete thought"?

A better definition: a sentence is a statement capable of being either true or false.

Minor problem with this definition: it excludes questions and exclamations from the category of "sentence."
