I heard that janet evanovich is pretty good, but then I borrowed one of her books and before I got to page ten there was kinky sex talk and harsh swears (not like crap or damn).
So, don't recommend her, please!!!
A good book (it could be romantic, action, mystery, whatever as long as it is funny) that doesn't have what turned me off in the evanovich book.
by the way the title of the book I am no longer reading is "Three to Get Deadly."
Yes, I know that parts of her books are really funny (I read a few funny paragraphs before I put it away) but I want something a bit more . . . uh. . . wholesome? Nothing cheesy, though, I'm not 10.

christopher moore! - lamb, fluke, the stupidest angel, practical demonkeeping, coyote blue (funny in the sense that you get lots of laughs and witty commentary)
martin amis - yellow dog, rachel papers. (funny in the sense that this man rips on people hard in the most hateful way -they deserve it.)

Douglas Adams, Robert Asprin (both the Myth and Phule's series) and Terry Pratchett are very funny. Lemony Snickett's "A Series Of Unfortunate Events" is a good read even for adults. P.D. Woodhouse should also be considered.
If you were a bit more open minded about swearing, sex, and the like, Tim Dorsey and George McDonald Fraiser would be good picks. Dorsey has some fantastic modern stories while Fraiser's Flashman series is set in the Victorian Age.

P. G. Wodehouse, actually.
I'm a fan of Spike Milligan, an Irish writer. Check out his book "Puckoon".
Other authors I'd recommend: Stephen Fry, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Dave Barry and Stephen Leacock.

These are kind of old but Dara Joy wrote a romantic/sci-fi book trilogy that was hysterical. I don't think I ever laughed so hard. It doesn't have inappropriate language but it does have a little sex. The name of the the 1st one is Night of a Trillion Stars and the 2nd is Rejar. You could probably find them at a used paperbook store.

Naked by David Sedaris is one of the funniest books I've ever read - as in laughing in public in the waiting room of a doctor's office full of terminal patients but I can't keep from laughing kind of funny. No matter what your age, the book's hilarious. Another one I remember fondly is Woody Allen's Without Feathers - but I don't think I've ever read anything as hilarious as Naked.

"Everyone worth knowing" was so funny. There was a little bit of love talk, but it's not over powering and very brief. It's about a young banker who quits her job and joins a Party Planning company where she gets pulled into the tabloides.
I couldn't put it down.

If you like parody, I recommend Bored of the Rings by the Harvard Lampoon. Lamb by Christopher Moore was hilarious, if you enjoy sacrilege like I do.
