Otherwise known as genital mutilation, it involves removal of the nerve-rich foreskin on the male penis. Uncommon in most countries (around 15% of the men in the world are circumcised) it became fashionable in the 60s in the US. In 1968 90% of all newborns were circumcised in America. That rate is now around 50% and falls annually.

Most nations consider genital mutilation barbaric; however, it is still done as part of the jewish and islamic faiths.

Contrary to popular myth, there are no medical reasons for circumcision - see the statements from the American Medical Association and the American Assocation of Pediatrics - both organizations state their is no need for routine circumcision.

This is something best left to an adult to decide; it should not be done on infants, since it is irreversable. The foreskin is not actually 'skin'. It is covered with a nerve rich mucous membrane that adds pleasure during sex.

Circumcision is mostly done a lot in the USA (the only advanced/industrialized nation to do so) but the rates are dropping fast (it's as low as 14% in some states). In addition, studies including new ones, have shown that circumcision has a negative effect on pleasure/sensitivity and masturbation. Circumcision is generally the forced removal (cutting off) of the foreskin from a child without the ability of the child to consent.

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin from the penis. The foreskin is extra skin on the shaft that covers the head of a penis. If your are circumcised, then there is no foreskin, and it's just the shaft and then the head. Most people in the US are circumcised. Also Muslims and Jews do it for religious reasons. It is also done in South Korea and the Philippines a lot too. In Africa some tribes do it as a rite to manhood. Other countries do it to, but not as much.

You spelled it correctly, which is actually unusual!

The skin removed from a male's penis is NOT "extra." It's there for two good reasons -- to protect the glans (head) and keep it sensitive, and to provide sexual pleasure. Fortunately the Internet is helping parents learn how disgusting this practice is, and the rates are falling rapidly.
