The router is connected to the desktop correctly but I cannot access the internet once it has replace my old modem. Am I suppose to call the cable (charter internet service) to let them know I've changed modems? I did, like 'ordered' but the lady didn't know what she was doing really...HELP (I'm trying to get wireless on my laptop..I've been using someone else's signal and I would like to use the one from my home.)

so the befcmu10 is a modem/router?
then you'll have to call in the MAC ( it's on the bottom of the router modem ) to Charter so they can update thier server to "see" you modem, once the MAC number is registered ( typically 15 minutes ) you be back on their network

I assume that your router worked with the previous cable modem and all you did was change the modem.

I further assume that you have a dynamic IP.

The ISP needs to know of the modem change because they usually link their service to the specific modem. This may be a major part of your problem.

However, the router needs to communicate with the modem and this may be an issue. Power down both modem and router; then turn modem on; after about 0.5 minutes turn on router and see if things work. This should rule out all the potential problems on your end before calling the ISP. Be sure to tell the ISP you did the reboot.

once you correct the connection no need to change back to old modem...
