I'm looking for both affordable weekday options, and a special place for a Saturday lunch/dinner - but it's for *this* Saturday, so all the 3-months-in-advance spots are out of the question :-)

I don't know where you are in LA but one of the best restaurants is across from the Good Sam Hospital, called Pacific Dining Car and you can go in jeans... For a fancy place, check out Lawry's in Beverly Hills.

If you're in LA county, North Woods is sooo good & is also casual. Of course, my parents & grandparents enjoy the old standards like the Brown Derby (I'm sure it's still in Arcadia but I don't know if they tore down the Hollywood location).

If they like Italian...
La Buca on Melrose, near the Paramount studios
http://www.osterialabuca.com/

It's a VERY small, nice place. The waiters are really friendly and the food is fantastic. I would say it is mid-priced, and would qualify as a special place unless you want to go somewhere more chichi. The ambience is very friendly & romantic, but it is a hole in the wall. You should make reservations because the place is small, but usually you just need to reserve a day or two ahead. It's my favorite restaurant in L.A., even compared to more expensive places it has the best pasta (homemade!).

None, and as an out-of-stater myself I wouldn't visit Los Angeles on a bet as we can get everything and more than you Golden Staters have to offer except the outrageous punitive taxes towards property owners.
