these are plugged into the router
-modem
-comp 1 with normal cat 5 ethernet
-comp 2 with crossover

i get internet on comp 1
and comp 2 wont even recognize that there is an ethernet cable plugged in.

can i use an xover cable and router in conjunction?

No, crossover are for direct PC to PC, you need another normal patch cable

Cross-over cables are strictly for pc to pc or hub to hub connections. Since the later switches and routers use cable polarity autodetect, a cross-over cable just locks you out.
