My history exam is coming up really soon and this is the essay question. Yes, it was nice for my teacher to give it to us in advance, but it has been tough for me to find the answer!!

Any suggestions?

Well aside from going to the library to check out a history of islam text (useful stuff when dealing with the history of islam) there are countless contributing factors:

One Muhammed was a travelling merchant and from a very substantial family, this lead to his fame (being an heir to a clan) and the ability to spread his teachings.

The teachings weren't just from his own brain either, they were an almalgamation from all the other teachings and ideaologies of the region. He was very accute to make sure he didn't contradict any single point directly.

Employment, the poor needed an income, he was able to provide, and they saw it fit to follow him.

Charisma, never out weigh that little dandy.

conquest over warring clans and factions, always a great spreader, almost like a knife and butter on toast.

Treaties, same as the latter, but not as messy.

These are the ones i could think of while sitting here. Later on the technological, legal, medicinal, and other such ameneties brought people to convert as well.

I really should dig out my books, but that's good enough to get you started i should think.
