I bought a window AC unit yesterday, and installed it. It was working for a few hours and later I found the electricity off to that bedroom and bathroom. I checked the fuse box and the fuse is alright. I turned back on a few hours later and it smelled like something was burning. I unplugged the AC unit and gave up on that idea. What can I do to restore electricity to those rooms?

if you smelt burning, CALL YOUR ELECTRICIAN, IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT TRY ANYTHING ELSE, your wiring is most likely under sized to run the A/C unit. it should be on a curcuit by itself. the electrician can check to see if some of the wiring is burnt and add the curcuit for the A/C unit. PLEASE CALL THE PRO'S ON THIS, IT COULD MEAN YOUR LIFE AND/OR YOU HOME...

Don't plug the Ac unit back in! You have an electrical problem
Do you have a fuse box ? If you do, the house must be really old and not able to handle the AC unit. Call a friend or Local electrician ASAP.

What you have done is over load the circuit enough to cause the wiring to hot and melt the insulation, or you have burned a connection or either the receptacle or in a conjunction box.

But From the way you are talking the circuit should have been able to handle the load unless someone replaced the 15 amp receptacle with a 20 amp receptacle.

Or you have older aluminum wiring. In either case you are going to need an electrician to fix the problem for you.

And have him be sure and check the fuse to make sure it is the right size. People have a back (dangerous) habit of putting larger fuses in when they get the circuit over loaded which burns up the wiring and is one of the main causes of house fires.

Get an electrician. If the current draw of that unit was too great for that circuit the fuse should've burned out. If it didn't it could've allowed some of your wiring to fry, a dangerous situation.

Turn the electricity off then on at the fuse box... if you have the old school fuses then replace those if they look burned. Otherwise if you have an outlet with buttons.. maybe someone pushed them in the bathroom just click reset. Otherwise.. just call the electrician :P or Uncle Bob ^^

just open the circuit breaker box or panel and look at the breaker with it's switch in the middle position. push it to the off sign ondicated in the breaker then turn it back on. most electric panel had the name of it's designated circuit so i'm sure you'll find your bedroom and bathroom no. in there. if you dont have a breaker box, just get a new fuse.

you probably tripped a circuit- sometimes even if the switch is slightly off, it can turn off the power. turn them off and on again and see if that works.
