I don't know who I would trust to give it to. If it is given to the police than forget it, it is not returning. I think I would take out a classified ad in my local paper, listing it under lost & found, and state I found something of value in that location. If someone calls with the correct amount, lost at the time you found it, then it must be theirs. Unless that happened then I would consider it a great piece of luck.

Well if it were near a fishing pond it is different than when you found it in the rental car, the person that lost it at the pond may never know where he/she lost it. So if you turn it in who knows what would really happen to the money, i would really have to think that through and I would have to be there to make the decision, but i would feel odd keeping it and not telling anyone!

I am curious as to why you put the setting at a fishing pond?
Yes I would return the money but a bag of money left in a secluded space,unlike where you found yours, is not likely to have identification in it so I guess one would have to check newspaper ads or the police station,right?

Near a pond with nobody's name on it I'd keep it. But in the rental car case that's a different story. You can always track down the previous owners to see if it wasn't theirs. And if no one claims it I think you should keep it.

I have in my life already returned something similar. It was a wallet filled with cash and not filled out money orders that totaled
$900. My family at the time could have really used the money.
I don't remember the person saying thank you either.

So now you found money near a fishing pond?! Boy are you lucky! Keep it, how would you return it. Keep it for a month, if after a month you don't hear anyone requesting the lost money, it's yours.

"Near a fishing pond?" That, I'd keep.
"In a field", I'd turn in.
"in a dumpster", keep;
"on the street", turn in.
Was the fishing pond location relevant, or just gratuitous filler?
Actually, who the hell can claim cash? "Yeah, that's mine, it has pictures of Franklin and Jackson on em!"
Rather than let some conniving rat like that get the cash, I'd keep it.

The person who you gave the money back to is an ungrateful miserableI person. what you did is honest. That money could be all the money that person has, and they couldn't eat or pay bills without it. if you give it back, you won't have a guilty conscience.

Sorry but I'd keep it... I have lived at the poverty level for most of my life and I deserve a break and a trip to Africa to meet my husbands family. I'd have to repent at a later date...

I've seldom heard of a good deed being financially rewarding. If you're returning it, it's because you're a good person who knows not to take what's not theirs. That being said, I'd keep it.
