if you mean ss like on a Formula 330SS it stands for Super Sport.

The question is for boats, not ships. If you are talking about ships, its "steam ship"

Meaning Of Ss On Ships

SS on a ship stands for Screw Steamer, screw refers to a propeller. Contrast to PS which was a paddle steamer, or MS (Motor Ship) which is a diesel boat. A lot of answers say it means Steamship, which is common usage today, since paddle steamers basically don't exist anymore. But Screw Steamer is more precise.

Good Lord I cant believe no one has gotten this right yet

S.S. means Steam Ship, a ship powered by steam turning turbines, or in the old days, pistons

its not Sailing Ship; S.V. would be correct and means Sailing Vessel

an M.V. is a Motor Vessel, ie its got diesel engines

oh yeah, SS is NOT the same as USS, which is United States Ship, ie US Navy commissioned ship

Amy,
SS stands for "screw steamer." Screw, in this case, means propeller. So this vessel would not be a sailing vessel or a paddle wheeler.

All those other answers are totally wrong.

It really depends on the type of boat your refering to.Power boat, sailboat etc.Probably "Supersport" on a powerboat,"sailing ship" on a large documented sailing vessel. In the US Navy it's a designation for a submarine!

Arr me maties,I stand corrected!
Yankee Sailor is correct, but the question was about a boat, not a ship. And with this will start yet another question.
