people kill themselves , and do many other rash things due to mental trauma so why is hitting someone viewed as being so much uglier on a social level ?

I agree with you, mental harm is much worse. However, it's easier to see the effects of physical harm than mental harm and it's also easier to figure out who caused it.

Mental harm can stem from physical harm. Mental harm is something that rarely goes away at all or can take years to recover. They're equal.

I personally think mentally harming someone is worse. Physical wounds will fade away over time but mental wounds don't fade away with time. They stay with you because the mind is much more diffcult to heal then the body.

... though I am only talking with my own expierence.

If somone covertly harms another mentally that person may end up doing irrational things that harm himself and others and he wouldnt even know why he did them.while the real culprit gets away with it. Just ask anyone who has been harmed by a scientologist.

Interesting point. I think that harming someone mentally is worse, however, by harming someone physically you could harm them mentally as well.
