Is it because they like to feel themselves clever? Or is it a need to denigrate to others that makes them feel smart?

It's usually deep personal insecurity.

Most often it is insecurity, or perhaps they feel cornered, or caught in a situation that makes them uncomfortable, so they strike out. Obviously, every situation is different, but rudeness generally is related to issues like these.

There are diferent reasons for this .Some of it is cultural what you consider rude may not be to another.
But sometimes it is insecurity and other reasons.

It's a need to get smarter. They really need to get smarter. Until then, they'll just be rude.

Being rude isn't a method of getting smarter, just a sign of the need.
