What did a cute little 5 year old PK/Kstudent do that deserves a Graduation? Can they get a job with that PK certificate? A "Promotion" or "Ceremony" would be more appropriate. Many students have "graduated" 3 or 4 times before the 12th Grade Graduation. Way too many students are not making it . Once they finish middle school, the children are not finishing or particpating in the Graduation the actually counts!! That job application or your resume reflects the year of High School graduation (not 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th, or even 9th).

I've been teaching a long time. I don't get it, either. My guess is to show the end of some era in their lives and that they are going on to another stage.

It's mostly for the parents, the child doesn't even really understand the meaning of the word. Graduation at the sixth grade makes a little sense because the children are moving to a major step in their lives and they may be leaving the students they went through school with. when they change schools. So it might make sense to have a graduation ceremony.

All graduations count! Depending on the school district, schools can have graduations for whatever grades they choose to, including 12th grade. Although 12th grade is arguably the most important graduation, there are many other important graduation milestones, like entering middle school, entering high school, leaving pre-school, etc.

Ceremonies glorify life.
Birth, death, Marriage. Graduation. Birthday.
Job promotion.
Each is a milestone in life and a treasure and spring board to the next accomplishment.

The same as the purpose of graduation FROM 12th grade - to mark a milestone in one's life publically. If recognizing their progress makes them more likely to stay in school, I'm all for it!
