My debate is on should tax be raised on fast food? And I am agreeing. So I have to do basically a little intro. Any points on what I can state? Then I'll be asked my the opposing team so I'm pretty sure they'll ask these questions - "define fast food" and "it's convenient though" and "if you don't have time to cook dinner what'll happen" etc. How can I answer those questions? And lastly do you have any questions I could ask the other team who are obviously saying that fast food should not have its taxes raised.

Thankyou to anyone who helps.

You could state that fast food is basically a luxury, even though it is inexpensive, it's something we can do without.
You could mention the health care costs with those who do not eat healthy, when over dependance on fast food can be a cause.
You could mention the environmental impact of fast food places, such as the garbage produced by wrpappers and packaging, littering and cars idling in the drive-thru lane, polluting the air, wasting fuel.
There are numerous convenience foods that can be bought at supermarkets, often cheaper, more nutritious and actually faster because they can be made in the home without driving to a fast food outlet.

Points you can make: fast food is very unhealthy, even though there are healthy choices available, people rarely choose them, thus, fast food is contributing to the obesity epidemic of our society. They will be less likely to pay more for a hamburger if it is cheaper to run to the grocery store and grab a pre-made dinner.

you could look up "fast food" in the dictionary and say that Webster (or whatever) defines fast food as...
Tell them with a little planning, a family can prepare a dinner in the same amount of time as it would take to stop and get dinner somewhere. you could even do a time test if you wanted. Convenient isn't always the best way to go. you could make the point that its more convenient to lock children in their rooms instead of raise them, but it isn't the best way to go.

hope that helps, you got the tough side of this debate!

I work at a fast food place and I have seen the prices rased like 5 times. But every price on everything is going up everywhere. So why not fast food. Why seclude that? INFLATION. I have to put up with rude people every day yelling at me because of the prices. But hey I don't make the prices people...I just do my job and serve. And there are alot of people that have time to cook but are just too lazy. But there are some that don't have time and I can understand that. My family might go to fast food like once every 2 weeks. Plus people will always say NO to the price or tax of anything going up. People are naturally greedy and no one wants to pay more. ME ME ME is what alot of people are like. Thank God we all aren't that way.

well basically fast food is the most unhealthy of all food. it is convenient but in 10 years when your 300 pounds. how convenient will that be? i completely agree. i think taxes should be raised or they should make their food healthier. if you dont have time to cook dinner then go to wal-mart and pick up a salad or something. there is soo many things people can do to eat quick. but nobody thinks about any of them because they always have fast food. i think its pathetic that the US is complaining so much about kids getting bigger. the problem is fast food. the parents dont feel like cooking or they dont have time. so they go out and buy their kids fast food. but if the taxes raised its either take 20 minutes out of your day to throw together a simple dinner or go broke and live on the streets. if we shut the fast food places or raised the taxes we would be tons more healthier.

If I were debating you on this issue I would accuse you of unjustly taxing the lower and working class citizens that depend on fast food for quick affordable meals. After both parents spend all day at work, fast food provides a way to feed the kids and still have time for homework and quality time. Increasing taxes would mean more time at work for mom and dad and more unsupervised time for Jr.. Can you say " increased crime rates", "Dysfunctional Family"? You are so insensitive to the working poor! What's next? Lowering the minimum wage? Maybe you could tax food stamps. How about an age tax for the elderly? Getting old causes a real strain on our health care system. How about a tax on working in an office all day. Lack of exercise is a leading cause of heart disease.

They raise taxes on everything else, why not fast food.
The thing is what are the using the money for, poor people need the government to create better guidelines to make life easier for the poor. Like incentives for more low income
decent housing for more reasonable rates. If and when taxes are raised; raise them enough to help the poor be better able to help themselves.

Yes to an extend. They should have calories pamphlets and some healthy choices available on the menu. But they are fast food restaurants, therefore the consumer needs to be responsible for the choices they make when they purchase their meals.

If taxes were raised on the food, do you think the quality of food would drop? To cover costs and such.
