In a certain mill the cost C is thousands of dolllars of producing x tons of steel is given by c=0.3x+3.5. The revenue R in thousands of dollars from selling x tons is given by r=0.5x
Find the point at which r=c (the break even point)

since you have r and c in terms of x you substitute them in for r and c in the equation r=c

.5x=.3x+3.5

Now you subtract .3x from both sides.

.2x=3.5

Then you divide each side by .2

x=17.5

Therefore at 17.5 tons of steel r=c

Amy - come on now...if r=c, simply put the two equations together and solve for x. 0.3x+3.5=0.5x, reduced that's 3.5=0.2x, or x=17.5...

0.3x + 3.5 = c = r = 0.5x
0.3x + 3.5 = 0.5x
3.5 = 0.2x
x = 17.5
