I would say an important fact in jamaican history would be... a lot of stuff.
we had independence in 1962, then we also had free education and healthcare during the 1970's which was modeled from the Cuban Administration (Cuba and Jamaica are very good allies).
However violence marred the 1980's when Edward Seaga was prime Minister, prices skyrocketed on everything, my grandmother says it was the worst time living in jamaica. Even Bob Marley got shot in the violence trying to make peace. (he didnt die from it tho).

In the 1990's I would say that there was maybe some more violence mainly because of prices rising because of the US dollar, we had good things too. A jamaican won the US spelling bee (they banned us the year after). we were made fun of at the winter games because we had a bobsled team, and we were a favorite at the olympics because of our athletes most notably, merlene ottey.

jamaicans have a rich history, any more just ask

The history of Jamaica is so vast......From the arrival of Christopher Columbus on May 4 1494 when he found Arawaks, now discovered to be Tainos, and Caribs, claiming Jamaica for the Spaniards, to the British capturing it and benefiting from all its natural resources. In between time, the pirate HQ was in Port Royal which was destroyed by earthquake. Slavery did not stop in 1806 like in other areas and there was the rebellion which subsequently resulted in Jamaica naming national heroes/heroine after slaves. Jamaica became independent in August 1962.

The history is quite interesting. Use yahoo search and type in 'Jamaican History'. There is a wealth of information there....and there are no pictures of dead people so dont feel afraid.

Jamaica gained full independence within the British Commonwealth in 1962. Deteriorating economic conditions during the 1970s led to recurrent violence and a drop off in tourism. Elections in 1980 saw the democratic socialists voted out of office. Political violence marred elections during the 1990s.
