2 to the third power = 2^3 = 2x2x2
2 to the fifth power = 2^5 = 2x2x2x2x2
so:
2^3 x 2^5 = 2x2x2x2x2x2x2x2 = 2^8 = 256

you mean 2^3 x 2^5
when you multiply two numbers to the power of something, its the same as multiplying that number to the power of the sum of the powers so
2^3 x 2^5 is 2^8 just add the powers when multiplying

When you're multiplying two numbers together of the same base, remember this rule: (a^b)(a^c) = a^(b+c). So here we have:
(2^3)(2^5) = 2^(3+5) = 2^8 = 256.
