OK, my son, who is 10 months old has starting gagging when I give him his baby food. He used to love it, eating three jars at the time. Now, he will only eat the fruits & deserts. Is this normal behavior, & how can I still be sure he is getting all the nutrients he needs? He has been eating a little table food: sliced cooked carrots, mac & cheese, sliced bananas, & mashed potatoes, but I am afraid that is not enough to give him what he needs. Is this just a phase or does he just not like baby food anymore? Please help, any advice is welcome. Thanks for you comments & advice.

All three of mine did that at around the same age. I was actually thankful because baby food is so expensive! You're doing exactly what you should be! He probably has some teeth now and wants some table food to chew on! Just keep giving him his formula/breastmilk and he'll get the nutrients he needs until he turns 1 which is when he'll be ready for whole milk. Good luck and push those veggies now to avoid a picky eater down the road!

My son, when he was at that age, saw what Mommy and Daddy was eating and he wanted some. At first, we were like, 'No way'. But he kept on. So one day we fixed some carrots and mashed potatoes and mashed them up a bit and see if he would eat them. He did, and he really dug it. Of course there are times that he thought he would like something we were eating, but in mid-bite he didn't like it, so he spit it out.

Eventually, we weaned him off the baby food, and started giving him veggies and other soft stuff. We then gave him bits of chicken and hamburger when he was a year old.

This is only the beginning of the food wars. As our pediatrician says, if he's hungry, he'll eat. If not, he won't. Don't force anything on him. It'll just make him not eat that much more.

As long as he's getting some food and drink in there, he'll be OK.

actually their bodies will start toi want diffenert type of nutrion outside of breast or formula milk.

So butternut really a full diet of nothing but milk wont due.

Ask your mom how you were and that might help ease you.
Milk and solids is the way to go, he likes what you give him. They have food for babies in the baby food section that can give you a good view on what to give him.

Mash your own baby food like the cooked chicked/ meat, veggie, fruits that you eat but with out the spices or seasoning. pop them in a food processer(or buy one that is for the job of baby food making) add formula to wet it up so he wont choke it. You can look up recipies on line to cook your self.

The only veggies my baby will eat would be Squash, sweet corn, carrots, butternut squash. Any other she hates. So maybe stick to veggies you know he likes.

She gets her oatmeal baby food for breakfest, fruit mix during lunch and supper veggies. All with the side of a bottle and bits of table food here and there.

She likes to chomp on french fries(with supervision of course), cooked green bean stalks, mash potato's, vanella pudding, Teething biscuts, smashed peaches and the list goes on. She is only 7 1/2 months so i know her limit on certain foods. Sometimes a few bits of pudding will do her and same for the rest.

It's just knowing when they had enough on bites

have you ever tasted that crap? trust me, you'd gag too. Don't worry, this is a good thing, means he's growing up, he's much more interested in that hamburger on your plate than that mushy bland green stuff he's been eating, the best thing to do is make him some of whatever you're eating, cut it into little pieces and let him experiment. If your worried about the nutrition ask his dr about a supplement

Our GI doctor insisted that liquid nutrition (breastmilk or formula) is all they really need until well over one. If your baby likes table foods, just give those. There is no reason that pureed food is required. Remember it is your job to offer a variety of healthy foods and the baby's job to eat. Offer as much variety as possible and don't focus only on the things that he likes.

My son went through that to. They all do. They go through some hungry strike. They have very small stomach so, they don't need that much food. Start him on table food it seems like he is ready. Cheeses, fruits, veggies, chicken.

My nephew was the same way. He gagged on Stage 3 foods but ate table food just fine. Eventually they all have to eat table food so try to give more regular food to your son.

Congrats!

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU NEED TO DEAL WITH A NUTRITIONIST Cause HES not eating healthy/well at all.

and why are you giving him sugar at all .?
of course they will go for that..
where is the protein and vitamins.

maybe get rid of all sugar a few weeks so get him "UN" used to it..
if hes got some teeth see how he does on people food
ask your pediatrician or nutritionist about switching..

there are many good books in library MD can recommend so you can look things up while at home too.

good luck!

Hi there. As long as he is still on formula or breastmilk, he's fine. My daughter is refusing veggies now, at 15mths. old. Just keep trying, it's a good possibility that he's teething. They tend to get fussy when their cutting teeth. Just keep trying! Try to be creative, hide the veggies in other stuff.

The fact that he only wants the fruits and desserts means he has developed a sweet tooth, and I would cut that out for a few days and just offer the vegetables. The desserts have a lot of sugar in them and never gave them to my daughter at all.
